2015 Ridge Ponzo Vineyard39.99Sonoma County, Russian River Valley97% Zinfandel 3%Petite Sirah

Favorable spring weather helped set a full crop at the Ponzo vineyard. The temperate climate of the Russian River Valley typically delays harvest into October, but by early September the grapes were fully ripe. After a natural yeast fermentation, we chose the Old Vines block for its structure and the Front and Back blocks for their intense fruit and aromatics.

2016 Ridge East Bench39.99Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley100% Zinfandel

After two short harvests, the vines set a full crop. Each parcel was picked and crushed to separate fermentors. Natural yeast fermentations were slow but steady; we limited pump-overs to once daily to manage tannin extraction. After malolactic we chose six of the seven blocks for their depth of fruit, color and structure.

The effects of the drought and resulting heat stress come through in the wine's structural feel and bold, incisive flavors. Spent 27 months in French oak. possibly the best - California Cabernet in its price range.

2013 Ridge Merlot54.99Santa Cruz Mountains, CA100% Merlot

Far from an easygoing wine, the 2013 Merlot hits the palate with serious intensity and tannic heft. Dark and virile to the core, the 2013 is flat-out delicious. Even with all of its intensity, the 2013 retains the classic Ridge sense of mid-weight structure. Readers should plan on cellaring the 2013 for at least a few years. This is impressive stuff.

MWC, Cabernet Sauvignon15.99Victoria, Australia

This region has a typical valley floor climate and large diurnal temperature swings between day and night. There is an abundance of lakes, billabongs and creeks around Goulburn River, as well as occasional river breezes. This leads to strong yields of balanced fruit, truly medium bodied with great spice and savory elements.

Domaine de Bellevue Beaujolais 'La Galoche' Rose15.99Gamay

It is fruit-driven yet dry, bright and engaging. Red fruits - strawberries, rapsberries and pomegranates - abound on the nose and palate. The fruit is undercut by a minerally edge (thank you, terroir!) and the merest hint of savory herbs - a total winner whether you drink it by itself or enjoy it with burgers, salads, seafood or chicken.

A very herbacious grassy nose that is not quite at catpee with a hint of an oxidative nature, much less aggressive on the palate than in the nose. It exhibits grapefruit rind and a hint of tangerine peel in the finish.

2015 Paolo Bea San Valentino69.99Umbria, Italy70% Sangiovese 15% Sagrantino 15% Montepulciano

The nose is pure Bea: a faint whisper of volatility leads the charge, met shortly thereafter by a rushing battalion of dark red and black fruits hurling all manner of Spice Route spoils at the stunned taster. The remarkably fresh palate underscores the vintage’s immense and deeply satisfying tension, and at 13.9% alcohol it feels nearly nimble.

Bitouzet Meursault Clos du Cromin79.99

Toasted hazelnuts, cream, cold butter, Porcini mushrooms, dried white flowers, dried yellow apple, Bosc pear, and wilted lemon blossoms slowly rise from the glass. The wine’s palate offers similarly impressive typicity; it’s a dense layer cake of baked stone fruits, toasted nuts and lime blossom, sitting atop a sturdy foundation of crushed limestone, oyster shells, and luscious cream.

Bitouzet-Prieur Puligny-Montrachet Les Levrons99.99

Soft reduction does not completely mask the aromas of gun flint, citrus and white orchard fruit aromas. There is good richness to the round and appealingly textured middle weight flavors that possess a lush mouth feel, all wrapped in a balanced, complex and lingering finish that displays a hint of bitter lemon. This opulent effort should also drink well young but age well too

Bitouzet-Prieur Meursault 1er Charmes114.99

A hint of sulfur does not materially detract from the ripe and fresh nose that is comprised by notes of apple, acacia blossom and pear scents. There is a lovely underlying tension to the well-detailed and delicious medium-bodied flavors that deliver fine length on the clean, dry and balanced finale.

Jean-Michel Gerin Viognier24.99Collines Rhôdaniennes

This is almost as impressive as Gerin's La Champine Syrah, which is a tremendous achievement as Viognier seems much harder to do well. Hints of crushed stone and struck flint add nuance to the ripe apricot aromas, while the exotic, tropical fruit flavors of mango and pineapple are reined in by a touch of citrus-pith bitterness.
