This Chianti Classico Riserva originates from vineyards which are over 40 years of age, and a soil rich in friable shale (Galestro) and limestone (Alberese). The result is a fruity, aromatic Sangiovese based wine with soft, fine tannins. This medium to full-bodied, well balanced wine is ready upon release, but will reward significantly with aging.

From 45+ year-old Melon de Bourgogne vines grown on the La Grange lieu dit, a south-facing vineyard set on micaschist near the town Le Landreau. This incorporates intriguingly smoky and mouthwatering saline mineral elements in a matrix of fresh apple and honeydew melon, leading to an impressively sustained finish that has no difficulty refreshing.

When the wine is young, use it as you would other Ligurian whites – that is, as an aperitivo and with fish and lighter vegetable dishes, including pesto). As the wine ages, it will stand up to stronger dishes (game birds?) and aged cheeses and becomes a candidate for a vino da meditazione.

It expresses a very beautiful maturity despite a year not so bright. The note and palate are correlated to the nature of the soil in Mercurey Les Montots: Clay-limestone with iron presence. This gives to the wine a racy, chiselled nose with chalky notes of cooked red fruits. On the palate,the wine is astonishingly supple and silky on first approach whilst the tannins are more presentson the finish lengthening the tasting and leave a powerful impression.
