2013 Sylvain Pataille Aligote la Charme aux Prêtres56.99BurgundyAligote Dore

Undeniably an astounding wine, revealing both its aromatic and textural complexity. Toasted, reductive notes on the nose at first, followed by fresh notes of anise and herbs (tarragon, lemon verbena). Intellectual due to its extraordinarily diverse expression — combining alpine freshness, Provençal herbs, and stony definition — but also generous in the way these layers unfold.

2012 Thibault Liger-Belair Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cur Les Gruenchers179.99

Outstanding. A beautifully elegant, spicy and intensely floral nose exhibits notes of violets and rose petal along with primarily red berry fruit scents that are framed in a hint of wood. There is a lacy mouth feel yet fine intensity to the delineated middle weight flavors that exhibit plenty of backend minerality on the balanced, long and sophisticated finish.

Ridge Monte Bello 2012189.9964% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot

The 2012 is a racy, voluptuous Monte Bello built on a core of sweet red fruit, with striking perfume, silky tannins and fabulous overall balance. The 2012 is of course an infant, and the new oak is still evident. As Vinous readers know, Monte Bello is a wine that really should not be touched until its tenth birthday, and even that requires an optimistic view.

2014 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru "Fremiets"119.99

Good dark reds, showing very good floral lift to the aromas of dark raspberry, licorice, mint and spices. Also considerably silkier in the mouth even if it's a bit youthfully compressed in the early going. The intense black cherry fruit carries well on the long, ripe, firmly tannic finish. One-third of this parcel was planted in 1999 and 2002, but the oldest vines date back to the late 1950s. This wine is much improved in the last few years as the younger plantings approach maturity, said régisseur François Duvivier, noting that very few vines at this estate pre-date World War II

Holus Bolus Syrah31.99Sta. Rita HillsSyrah from John Sebastiano Vineyard in Sta. Rita Hills

Though this bottling is Peter Hunken's least-expensive Syrah, it gives his single-vineyard expressions a serious run for the money for best of vintage. Amazing aromas of chipped asphalt, smoked beef, dense boysenberry, soy, cedar, sandalwood and soy drop into a palate of peppery berry juice, beef jerky, underripe blackberry and elderberry, and pepper-crusted teriyaki beef.

Brovia Barolo 201259.99Piedmont, ItalyNebbiolo

A blend of the younger vines found in the various “crus”. There is never excess here, no attempt to showboat or to flaunt an image of power. Above all, balance is the key element in faithfully rendering a Barolo of great stature. You will find here the classic grainy tannins, the long, mineral-inflected finish, the aromas of late-summer roses and flavors of dried cherries.

This too is extremely fresh though with a bit more aromatic breadth to the floral, citrus, pear and apple-scented nose. The middle weight flavors possess an attractive texture and solid concentration before terminating in a balanced and lingering finish.

This is impressively balanced, respectably concentrated and beautifully structured. It is perhaps the best regular Assyrtiko that I have seen from Santo Wines. Bright, clear yellow color. Dry with a distinct aromas of citrus and flowers, combined with hints of smoke and minerals from the volcanic soil. Full-bodied, well-balanced with intense flavors and long finish.
