Highland Park Dark Origins79.9946.8% Orkney Islands Single Malt“The best spirit I've tasted all year. Five stars.” - F. Paul Pacult, Spirit Journal 2014

A big dose of dry sherry ignites a sulfurous kitchen match, & a certain burnt quality permeates the stewed stone fruit, woody spice, fatty chestnuts, dense botanicals, & earthy peat. Charred marshmallow, overripe banana, a leather tobacco pouch, & the leafy Orkney heather all have their turn. Fruit jam and bitter greens vie atop sandalwood, baking chocolate, figs, & black tea.

Balvenie 12yr doublewood73.9943% alc Speyside

Silky and downright succulent, this Scotch is made with two types of oak casks—as the DoubleWood name suggests—but it's really all about the influence of the ex-Sherry cask. Aromas suggest golden raisins and dried apricots. The silky palate starts out moderately smoky, but glides into a richer, honeyed, nutty profile that finishes with cocoa and clove accents.

Highland Park 12yr46.9943% Orkney Islands Single Malt

Elegant, light & pretty. This amber spirit has a light, briny vanilla scent & a silky feel. A veil of smoke rises through the Scotch (but fades out fast), leaving behind a sweet nutty, vanilla finish. One of the gold- standard malts for other distillery bottlings to aspire to. With a delicious sweetness (heather-honey is their preferred description) & a warming, silky mouthfeel

Laphroaig 10yr cask strength71.9956.3% alc Islay single malt

Pungent and medicinal in personality, with gobs of peat, tar, iodine, brine, and seaweed. These are all good things.in case you were wondering. A gentle vanilla sweetness tries to tame this savage beast, but it is no match. One of the most challenging-yet rewarding-whiskies in the entire world. What Cantillion Lambic is to beer, Laphroaig Original Cask Strength is to whisky.

Auchentoshan 12yr49.9940% Lowland single malt

The aroma is full of tropical fruits and toasted cereal. Upon tasting, you'll get coconut, vanilla, and caramel. This isn't an over-the-top, malty Scotch whisky, but rather a smooth jazz version. Soothing and mellow, this is a whisky perfect for bourbon drinkers longing to make the leap to Scotch-land.

Glenmorangie 10yr44.9943% Highland single malt93 Points, Whiskey Advocate

Fresh, vibrant, and beautifully complex. A clean, malty foundation accentuated by bright complex fruit, delicate spice, dried flowers, and gentle honeyed vanilla notes that linger on the palate. This is a wonderful whisky which is very versatile. Ethereal is the byword, starting from the floral and vanilla aromas that combine with pear, toffee and nuts. Aged in bourbon casks.

Cardhu 12yr53.9940% alc Speyside single malt

This soft, bright, easy-going whisky is back in the U.S. market after being absent for several years. Very fragrant, with vibrant fruit (nectarine, plum, guava, pineapple, clementine), honeyed vanilla, and subtle macadamia. Fairly light (a pre-dinner or leisurely afternoon malt, perhaps?) but evenly balanced. A gentle introduction to single malts for the blended scotch drinker.

Oban 14 Year99.9943% West Highland single malt

Oban 14yo is a superb, full-blooded fruity malt with a whiff of heather and ample smoke. The medicinal notes are quite evident with notes of the sea; while there are notes of cut hay and wood smoke rising with a gentle estery sweetness. Beautifully balanced, the smokiness is tinged with seaweed, while the oak is rich with grist, cereal and malt. Wonderfully smooth and a lengthy finish.

Oban 18yr139.99Highlands43% West Highland single malt

On the nose this single malt delivers bright citrus zest, light raw honey, and orange marmalade, with a crisp kiss of sea-spray brininess. Upon first sip, rich spicy oak, warm spiced cider, salted caramel, and golden delicious apples, are mingled with hints of the nearby sea with just a touch of seaweed. The finish is long and oily with warm honey-drizzled fruit notes.
91 Points, Whiskey Advocate.

Oban Little Bay79.9943% West Highland single malt92 Pts, Whiskey Advocate

Finally, an unimpeachable counterpoint to the rally cry against no age statement whisky. Oban Little Bay is everything that Oban 14 is, and more. A rich, fruity, malty nose showcases dried apricot, dark chocolate, and salt. On the palate, Little Bay explodes with flavor, combining malt with orange, chocolate, and blackberry. Clove and oak spice join the party in the mid-palate.

Lagavulin 8 Year Old67.9943% Islay Single Malt94 Pts, Malt Adovcate

Released to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the founding of Lagavulin distillery by John Johnston in 1816, this eight-year-old is big and smoky, with sweet spice that becomes apparent with a drop of water. Rich, chewy, slightly oily texture. Deep peat, thick smoke, iodine, brine, charcoal, seaweed, Earl Grey tea, and the aromas of a summer barbeque. Vanilla and light caramel soften the intensity, while subtle citrus fruit teases. Powerful, yet polished and seamless. After all these years, this whisky is still one of the finest standard issue peaty, smoky whiskies!

Lagavulin 12yr Cask Strength159.9954.4% Islay Single Malt

On the nose, this natural cask strength expression combines powerful peat-smoke with fresh clean aromas and an intense fruity sweetness. Add water and the aromas grow livelier, with mint and distant volcanic smoke. The palate is surprisingly mild; sweet and smoothly oily, with a rising smoky pungency, and when water is added a hugely smoky-honeyed sweetness develops.

Glenlivet 18yr114.9943% Highland single malt

There’s no doubt that this is from Glenlivet; there’s still that pure combination of fruit and flowers, now given a little nudge toward a more concentrated expression: the flowers are dried & heathery, the fruits tinned pineapple, windfall apples. An added cedar/nutmeg note adds to the complexity. Liquorous & tongue-clinging w/custard tart notes before the autumn fruits show

Laphroaig 25yr499.9946.8% Islay single malt

The initial sherry sweetness is quickly followed by the time-honoured Islay peat tang. After this opening burst of flavor, there is a smooth fruit ripeness that complements the tang of salt in the background. The burst of peat that fills the mouth is quickly restrained by a sherry sweetness that slowly develops into spicy apple fruitiness. The finish is long and warming.

Balvenie 17yr DoubleWood159.9943% alc Speyside single malt

First aged in ex-Bourbon casks then finished for another spell in ex-sherry casks, this is the richest and smoothest expression from Balvenie we've seen in a while. Big flavors of cakebread, cinnamon, fresh baking spices, and butterscotch that move over the palate at a slow crawl, but it's never overtly sweet or cloying. It's decadent stuff.

Highland Park Ice Edition 17yr349.9953.9% Orkney Islands Single Malt

The nose is fruity, like a tropical dessert seasoned with vanilla syrup, a pinch of shredded ginger, and a spoonful of cinnamon. Throughout is a tinge, and only a tinge, of wood. A slick sipper with a spicy and sweet character, as in spicy first, sweet later. The cinnamon, ginger and vanilla are now buttressed by a peppery current, fading to a wet, sweet tobacco note.

Laphroaig Lore127.9948% alc Islay Single Malt

Roasted nuts, briny peat and vanilla greet the nose. The palate contains that telltale, medicinal, maritime campfire smoke and salty richness Laphroaig is known for, proudly holding court above all else. A couple of drops of water reveal dried dates, figs, apricot, toffee, cocoa and spiced accents of ginger, cardamom, fennel, clove, cinnamon and cedar. A very generous finish.

Macallan 18yr349.9943% Highland Single Malt

Rich burnished mahogany. Balanced aromas of rich dried fruits & Spanish oak wood spices (ginger & cinnamon). Sweet with summer fruits and light nuttiness. Flavors of dried fruit, resinous, wood spices with a hint of smoke. Lingering wood on the finish, spicy, fruity with light smoke. touch of sweet honey, bitter chocolate and espresso on the lingering finish.

Highland Park 15yr84.9943% alc Orkney Island single malt

The nosing passes find lightly toasted malt notes along with wood, sawdust, distant mint, and light caramel-not the most expressive Highland Park bouquet. The palate entry highlights the maltiness; at midpalate the taste becomes sweeter and honey like complementing the grain/malt base. Finishes assertively with the spirit underlining the honeyed sweetness.

Sahndi - La Côte99.99Santa BarbaraPinot Noir

In the glass the wine is noticeably lighter in color than the other bottlings, but doubly as aromatic. Perhaps the first thing one smells is just how much closer to the Pacific Ocean La Côte sits. The bright saline lift of the aromatics evokes vivacity and energy. The wine is lively on the palate and its bright red fruits integrate playfully with polished tannins.
