On his home estate in Charnay in southern Beaujolais, Brun planted Chardonnay in 1983 on the sandy, limestone-rich clay soils. The vines are organically farmed and the fruit harvested by hand, then fermented with natural yeasts. The wine goes through malolactic fermentation and is aged in steel and concrete. A minimal amount of sulfur is applied at bottling.

A ripe plum aroma is joined by the slightest hint of creosote on the nose. The palate echoes the nose, adding blueberry and cassis notes joined by dried tobacco and allspice. There is a firm grip of tannins that holds on tight, but is eventually taken over by a wash of mouthwatering acidity on the plummy finish.

A charming, fruit-forward effort with plenty of blueberry and cherry-like fruit as well as classic spice box and peppery herbs. Medium-bodied and nicely textured, with chewy tannins, it doesn't quite have the texture of the others, but it’s nevertheless incredibly charming and satisfying.
