One of central Italy’s classic white grapes, Verdicchio thrives in two distinct zones of the Marche. The best vineyards of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi adorn hillsides a mere 20 miles from the Adriatic Sea. Tignanello 2021 is ruby red with intense purple hues. The nose is complex: notes of ripe plums, blackberries and candied orange peels lead to pleasant hints of dark chocolate, caramel, and licorice. Sweet hints of tobacco complete the impressive bouquet. The palate is rich, sophisticated, intense and is defined by supple vibrant tannins followed by a long persistent finish.

Sweet aromas of cherry and chocolate cake play on the nose, but only within the bounds set by balancing undertones of soil and stone. The palate brings more fruit, more earth and an emergent herbaceousness, while acid fizzes around grippy, chalky tannins.

Also typically less smoky than mezcal from Oaxaca, the maestro mezcalero places wood on top of the still, which absorbs some of the smoke. This mezcal is 100% Durangensis, called cinezo locally, fermented with wild yeast in wood then distilled in a combination of wood and copper stills.

Garnet red with an intense bouquet, wood and notes of vanilla and spices clearly show through on the nose, owing to aging in large oak casks for 28 months. Bold, the tannins are assertive, yet very well-balanced. The 2012 Reserve comes out of the oldest vineyards in Rocche dell'Annunziata, now more than 40-years old.
