Claus Preisinger is a now-risen star of natural wine in Austria. Although the "Bruck" site is considered the best and warmest in Viessling, it is nevertheless one of the coolest, because it is also the highest in the Wachau. Viessling can be seen as a counterpoint to the much warmer terroir of the east of the Wachau. My Rieslings develop a unique fruitiness with spicy notes and a delicate minerality here.

Heidi Schröck took over her family winery in 1983, in the historic village of Rust. In 2003 Heidi was awarded “Falstaff Vintner of the Year”, making her one of only a handful of women to obtain this distinction.

Spontaneous fermentation, with very low sulphites, this wine is a nod in the natural and orange style of winemaking. Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Welschriesling make up the blend. This ‘living’ wine is appley, yeasty and fresh, with hints of rose and lychee. Sealed with a crown cap.

The Zwettl Monastery was founded in 1074 and in 1171 the Monks of Zwettl were granted their first vineyards. Zweigelt fits perfectly into the estate’s Burgundy focus, especially as this variety is related to Pinot Noir. The Zweigelt vineyards in Gobelsburg are found on banks of crushed gravelly stones that were formed during the last Ice Age.

Heidi Schröck took over her family winery in 1983, in the historic village of Rust situated in the province of Burgenland about 5 miles from the Hungarian border. This wines is from the Klum Vineyard the oldest of Heidi’s sites, planted by 3 of her great aunts in 1955.

Blackcurrants, dark cherry, cracked black pepper, and dried herbs on the nose. The palate is firmly midweight with soft tannins, a firm throughline of acid holding it all together. A brilliant wine for any kind of hearty meal containing sausage, mushrooms, or smoked meats.

Graupert means "tangled" or "wild", a characteristic of these particular vines grown at Meinklang farm. These vines feature smaller grapes and thicker skins. Such grapes are very aromatic and, when vinified, produce wines of darker color. Graupert Pinot Gris is a skin contact wine, hence the rose-golden yellow color, honey, and dried apricot on the nose. Delicious, interesting, and a versatile wine for food pairing.

Setzer is located in Hohenwarth, (“high observation point”) a town whose winemaking history dates back to 1360. The Setzer winery was founded in 1705, and remains one of the oldest continuously run estates in this part of the Weinviertel. One feels the elevation in the slightly higher level of acidity making this wine “sing in a different register”.

The Michlits family farms about 170 acres of vineyards, part of a much larger “mixed farm” where grains, fruit orchards, and vegetables are also grown along Lake Neusiedl on the border with Hungary. This tastes like Muscat whose neck had been bitten by a white witch, causing it to fall into a swoon. It has a mere (and welcome) 12.5% alc and a little “natural wine” flavor; it’s juicy, leesy and dry, more the linden and chamomile aspects of Muscat and less of the orange blossom. Soulful, original, and please don’t drink it too cold.

Germans call it Lemberger, Austrians call it Blaufränkisch; let's call the whole thing off. What's important is that this black grape variety produces spicy wines with good tannins and firm acidity, similar to one of the crus of Beaujolais; in fact, until recently, Blaufränkisch was believed to be Gamay. These are often ageworthy wines, and they're Austrian beauties!!

Martin Nigl’s Freheit is sourced from 4 different vineyards in the hills above the city of Krems. The name Freiheit means “freedom” and is believed to be some of the first privately owned vineyard land in the valley not controlled by the Church or a feudal estate.

The winery continues to utilize organic winegrowing and has benefited from the fact that the monks of Zwettl Monastery began these practices as early as 1958.

Gut Oggau is a biodynamic project started in the small town of Oggau in Burgenland, Austria. Named after the winemakers' daughter, Theodora is the prankster at the vineyard Oggau. Being both impudent and elegant, she is nonetheless most reliable and steady, as is her namesake juice. The blend of Grüner Veltliner and Welschriesling (no relation to Riesling) develops in barrel for an elevage of about 9 months, with no batonnage. The wine is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with zero addition of sulfur and shows incredible minerality that might remind you of the French Loire Valley’s salty and smoky flavours.
