American-born Ginny Povall moved to South Africa to run a Protea Flower farm and ended becoming a winemaker. Her organic farm still grows more flowers than grapes and many of the wines are influenced by a kiss of pollen in the air. Kosie van der Merwe comes from a 5th generation farming family in the Swartland but now the up-and-coming young winemaker splits his time between South Africa and Germany. This delicate and fresh Syrah comes from the cool Elgin region. Pair with bbq duck or spicy lamb and scallion stirfry.

These Chenin Blanc bush vines are situated on the gravelly slopes and decomposed granite soils of the Helderberg where they benefit from the cooling maritime breezes off False Bay. Aromas of lemon verbena, thyme and gooseberry, along with blackcurrant leaf and some unripe guava lead to a stony and fresh palate showing bracing acidity and a flinty smokiness. The palate is neither overly green nor tropical, with acid and alcohol perfectly in tune with the fruit.

Tremayne Smith is representative of the new generation of South African winemaker. Sourcing fruit from smaller, old, low-yielding vineyards and then picking for delicate high acids, he makes the wines with minimal intervention using native yeast, minimal SO2 and bottling with limited filtration. This Pinotage shows a fresh, fruit-driven style, a true vehicle of the land.

The base wine was kept on the lees for 8 months initially during the first fermentation. 10% of the Chardonnay was Barrel Fermented. The second fermentation that occurs in the bottle ages on the lees for 84 months. After “disgorgement”, or removal of the yeast lees, and “dosage” (adding base wine and sugar) the final product is left on the cork for 9 months, and then released.

The aromas are very complex and change considerably in the glass. Perfume, spice, tea, stone fruit and citrus blossoms are some of the notes detected. Time spent on the less in concrete tanks and old casks gave the wine incredible texture and palate weight. The aromas are flinty with honey, orange blossom and white stone fruit notes. It is is as deep and rich in flavor as its yellow hue predicts, moving from waxy apple flavors to mango, wildflower honey and tangerine. Bright acidity holds the flavors taut and firm.

South Africa offers some of the world’s oldest Chenin vines, in a myriad of terroirs, from some of the world’s most sophisticated and thoughtful winemakers. this bounty oftentimes comes to us at an exceptional value. The wine was aged for 11 months in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barrels. The wine can be enjoyed now, but will improve over the next 5 years.

Grapes were handpicked from 8 year old vines the grapes were delivered to the cellar, in the early morning, and whole bunch pressed into stainless steel tanks. the Chardonnay was racked to second fill French oak barrels for fermentation and the Pinot Noir was racked and fermented in stainless steel tanks. This results in a well balanced sparkling wine that is dry and lovely!

This bright blend provides aromas of black cherry, meat, and blackberries. The palate tastes of red plums, currants and licorice, with a thread of spice throughout. This juicy and spicy blend is perfect for pork, beef or game. A great value wine from a great South African producer.

The De Wetshof Estate Limestone Hill Chardonnay never sees oak, and offers impeccably pure, refreshing apple, peach and lemon fruit, a lovely leesy richness of texture, and a nutty, chalky, fruit-filled finish of imposing length. Understated and less tropical than some of the better un-oaked Chardonnays, this wine possesses far better balance and sheer drinkability.

Classic dark berry fruit with a hint of dark chocolate and violets on the nose. On the palate it is well balanced with rich, soft tannins. The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon was picked at optimum ripeness, with half of the fruit coming from Devon Valley and the balance from Villiera. The Cabernet Franc was picked earlier and also comes from Devon Valley.
