The bouquet features scents of vanilla bean, dark honey, nougat, pipe tobacco and rancio. The palate entry is fat and creamy; at midpalate intensely sweet flavors of honey, dark toffee and cocoa take charge. Texture is heavy. Finishes on a honeyed note.

I was quite taken with the wines I tasted from Moutard this year. It emerges from the glass with high-toned notes of Mirabelle plums, kirsch, crushed flowers and sweet herbs. There is an exotic quality that is totally beguiling. Intensely aromatic and layered through to the finish, the Grande Cuvee impresses for its delicate feminine personality and overall balance.

Amphibolite is a metamorphic stone generally formed from gabbro or basalt with a high concentration of iron and magnesium prevalent in the vineyard over a bedrock of gneiss. "Subtle aromas give way to a palate that's concentrated, full-flavoured and explosive, with lots of texture and a rocky mineral tingle. Pear skin and a bite of Golden Delicious apple. Cashew richness adds depth. I love the saline finish."
