"The douROSA 2012 red is a typical Douro wine with cherry and herbaceous aromas but with a slightly lighter, more relaxed style. 2012 was a perfect year for wines where freshness, aroma and elegance were more important than concentration and power."

The wine starts with more tea and tobacco at first, but as it opens up, the big, dark fruit and cocoa notes rise up. A hint of
eucalyptus and violets add a complex layer to the nose. The blackberry, dried cherry, and chocolate are dominant on the palate. The combination of French and American oak adds vanilla, toast.

Smoky black cherries on the nose, juicy, smooth, full-bodied weight and texture, finishes with black plum note. Ripasso translates to “re-passing” and means fermenting Valpolicella wine a second time with dried Amarone grapes to deepen the flavour, body and persistence of the wine. I love persistence in a wine: shows great character!

The perlage is particularly fine, tight and persistent, with very obvious and well distributed bubble-chains. The bouquet reveals itself through very pronounced accents that provide a particular refinement and complexity. The dominant floral notes of hawthorn, sagebrush and bay leaves are distinct, broad and voluptuous. The flavor is dry, exceptionally elegant and pleasing.

Shows very good energy and clarity on the long, floral finish, which features gentle tannins and lingering spice and mineral qualities.

Ricardo Sanz is one of the leading figures in the Rueda D.O. His 2013 Palacio de Menade is clean, citrusy, and quite refreshing. It is a leaner style, without any of the tropical fruit sometimes present in wines from Rueda. Enjoy this as a delicious change of pace from Sancerre or Sauvignon Blanc.
